Sarah Wiltshire grew up on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a hugely diverse and beautiful landscape. This stretch of coastline was a feast for the senses and exploring its unique geology sparked a lifelong interest in the natural world.
Following in the footsteps of intrepid Victorian seaweed hunters, Sarah collects a diverse range of specimens at low tide and hand-presses them in her studio. The process of foraging, identification and pressing is a joyous journey of discovery, and how seaweeds respond to this creative process is endlessly fascinating. Her background in design has definitely influenced what forms and colours she is drawn to, and which pieces she believes will make the best compositions.
Seaweeding is a very mindful process and the perfect opportunity to slow down and really engage with nature. This practice of observing enables her to find and showcase more unfamiliar seaweeds. It is always a thrill for her to find something new, and enjoy the challenge of identifying it!
“Apart from the enjoyment of creating these truly unique pieces of artwork I am constantly amazed and in awe at the sheer diversity and beauty of seaweed”.
