Artists exhibiting this year

EDA GARDNER-GROVES

is a young artist displaying her second exhibition here at the Coach House.   Eda’s love of the natural world is often translated throughout her paintings, and is fortified by her knowledge of foraging, fungi and frolicing.  her work is presented with the spirit of enthusiasm, purity and passion which can hopefully be witnessed and enjoyed in her innocent and magical creations.

DONA CRISFIELD

Garden Cutting Designs is the work of artist and gardener Dona Crisfield.
I produce original collage pieces, inspired by plants and gardens, created by cutting and layering hand painted paper. My new pieces are based on all the plant combinations in the gardens I know and visit. I am effectively planting up a border with paper. From my artworks I produce prints using lightfast pigment on fine art paper to ensure quality and longevity.

KEZIAH FURINI

I’m an illustrator and graphic designer based in Brighton. I capture the people and places around me and am inspired by themes that connect community, environment and what it means to be human. I’ve been commissioned by a broad range of organisations that reflect these themes such as, The Countryside Charity, The Revival Collective, Farnham Maltings and Museum Crush. I create all my illustrations using a digital drawing tablet which gives me the freedom to experiment with bold colours and compositions.

POLLY MANDALL

Polly was born in 1974 and grew up in a very supportive family in Hullbridge, a small village in Essex. . She chose to follow a career in social care, working with young people with learning difficulties and complex medical needs, always bringing her creative mind to her work, supporting
and helping to create access to Art, music and drama.
She began lino printing with a very basic set.
She is completely self taught, favouring reduction printing right from the start. All of her prints are multi layered, printed by hand using a baren.
She is inspired by the beauty of nature, colour, pattern and loves using the “chatter “ of the lino plate to create movement.
Polly can be found at Makers Markets, and loves taking her work to festivals in the summer in her campervan, which also doubles as a travelling art studio.
She is an active part of the Sussex Art collective, regularly exhibiting at Gallery UNO.
Polly would love to transfer some of her designs to fabric in the future and even use her lino plates with clay and explore ceramics. These are multi layered, reduction lino prints, all original designs, I am inspired by nature, colour and pattern, I love to create the feeling of movement in my work, all are  printed by hand using a baren.
Some of my work are stand alone original prints  and I also collage multiple prints.
The intricate collages are then scanned in high quality definition and then Art quality prints are made.

BARBARA RYAN

After a truly valiant battle against chronic illness, Barbara passed from the physical realm last August. She gained her 1 st Class honours Degree in 1991, and as an artist, writer, poet, perfumeur, herbalist and synaesthete was greatly influenced by her time in the former GDR, where she lived and worked from 1992–1994.
Her pieces have always combined an eclectic mix of mediums and processes, and from 1994 she worked predominantly – but not exclusively – as an installation artist, living in Brighton and East Sussex, and exhibiting mainly in the UK and Germany.
The works on display here show her adaptability across mediums, and are evidence of her love of wood and the potent energies within nature. They were created during the enforced ‘lockdowns’ of 2020, and could be considered a primordial response to the changing environment around her – showing concerns for: protection, defence, fortification and guardianship – using available materials that she had hand-picked from a fairly nearby Sussex woodland.
Barbara was a unique force. One could say that these artworks express respect for the transient nature of life and the human spirit that is always fragile, yet when bound together can potentially be strong.

CAROLYN COX

is a printmaker and illustrator based outside Lewes, E. Sussex, on the edge of the South Downs National Park. It’s this beautiful curving landscape with its pillowy Downs and chalky grasslands which is the source of inspiration of much of her linocut prints.

Originally from County Down in N. Ireland, she graduated from University of Ulster in Graphic Design before moving to London where she worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines and children’s books. Her best selling book from that time is ‘The Lion Children’s Bible’ which has sold over 4 million copies and been translated into 38 languages.

For the last few years, Carolyn has been working in linocut, drawing inspiration from the wildlife while walking in the Downs through the seasons, which is the beginning of the creative journey for her. She enjoys using a limited palette to concentrate on form and composition

JULIA WHITE

Julia White is a Sussex based artist inspired by nature. She forages for plants on the Sussex Downs and recently has been experimenting with light and form. Creating bespoke 3d work using direct printing tequniques and cyanotype.

SCARLET OSTICK

SCARLET OSTICK
Outsider artist Scarlet has this year been experimenting with ‘Main a prima’ and ‘Decalcomanie’ – techniques used by surrealist artists such as Max Ernst, Ernst Fuchs and Salvador Dali. This has felt like an exploration of the sphere of Netzach – the Qabalistic realm of chaotic, abundant nature. She has been further delving into a sense of this using collage.

GEMMA CHALLENGER

Gemma Challenger studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton where she continues to work as an artist and illustrator. She is interested in concepts of time, the seasons and the interrelationship and interconnection between humans and the natural world. Her work responds to the environment around her and she enjoys watching how it changes from her vantage point.
