WHERE THE SOUND GOES

An exploration of a children’s view of where the sound the goes.

Dates open to public 10th-11th and 17th -18th   11-5 pm

just walk up the drive !

I am really excited to invite you  to be part of our first official children’s exhibition in January 2026  At The Coach House in  Kemptown Brighton.

We’re  delighted to fix the exhibition dates for the following weekends January 10 and 11th, 17th and 18th
(times 11-  5.00pm, invigilated  daily.)

This will be open to the public and there will be a private view beforehand to bring your friends and family too.

So why are we doing this ?

The initial inspiration was to carry on the legacy of a very special lady called Margaret Shillan who inspired creativity and shared the value of the creative process with many people through her classes. Margaret held art classes here at At The Coach House and travelled all over the world teaching in schools to children and adult adults who are less privileged. She was very much loved and her love for nature was often reflected in her work.

By setting up this children’s gallery we want to pay a tribute to Margaret and ensure that her wonderful influence carries on into the world encouraging children to get creative and inspiring all you come to view the gallery.

So what do you do to join this exhibition?

Firstly our deadline to confirm that you want to take part is the 5th of December

We would Like you to write a letter to us saying how you would like to exhibit here. Handwritten is my favourite.
We don’t need to know exactly what you are going to do but just we need to be able to confirm numbers!
(I am inviting you all first and can guarantee a space to you all but you need to write a letter to confirm )

Please leave an address, if you would like me to write you a letter back by hand – something I love to do.

The outline of the exhibition

We have decided to give the exhibition a theme:

Where the sound goes?

Some prompts, maybe:

  • Where does the sound come from?
  • Can you follow it?
  • How does it travel or move?
  • What is it?

How would you describe this in your creative process?

Please know there is no right or wrong here  just your own way and thought process, it could be as creative as you like, as magical and mysterious as you like, as scientific as you like or as funny or sad or…… Anything you like!

You could take inspiration from;

  • Listening to voices
  • the wings of a bird making sounds
  • The inside noise of a shell
  • The sound of your cat purring
  • You running on the Earth
  • Your hands clapping
  • The rain falling through the trees
  • The sun drying the leaves…

What are yours?

Maybe some of you paint
Maybe some of you are musicians
Maybe some of you are builders
Maybe some of you want to tell a story through your process
Maybe some of you want to record a film
Maybe some of you are dancers
Maybe some of you are not able to know what you want to do yet!
Maybe some of you can’t read right or walk yet.

Its all okay and that the creative process starts from wherever we are.

No prices will be displayed but if the public wants to buy art and if the artist wants to sell it, it will be a transaction between the artist and the buyer. And an option to donate to the school Margaret to touch should they want to support this is the artist’s choice.

There may be an opportunity to share your creative process should you wish to ( Margaret was a Big fan of diary keeping and many of these will be on display during the exhibition ).
